The Devastation Of The Indies: A Brief Account by Bartolome de Las Casas 1552

While I was reading Bartolome de Las Casas’s article  ‘’The Devastation of The Indies: A Brief Account ‘’, I felt terrified . Because what the Spaniards did is horrible and inexcusable to Indies. The Sparniards killed a lot of people inculuding; babies, woman, old man, children… and they only did this for their own sake. The indies were innocent and their only guilt was their purity and they believed  Spaniards’s thoughts and promises. The Spaniards came to this island for teach to Indies ‘’Christianity’’ but that was a big lie. They deceived  Indies with promises and words. This was  the best and easiest way to convince them.

We know that; colonialism is the building and maintaining of colonies in one territory by people from  another territory.  There are some reasons for colonialism ; their profit to be made , to expand their territory. The Spaniards also wanted to expand their territory so that  not only they colonized Indies but also they tortured them barbarically. They raped innocent woman and girls also king’s wife without thinking respect or rules. They destroyed their life and their life style. Because before their coming, Indies  lived in peacefully maybe they lived in poor and bad conditions but at least they were good and live comfortably.

When we came to the end , we saw the de Las Casas’s thoughts about this genocide. He got angry and he explained us the whole destruction with his shock. He showed us that Indies are innocent and unprotected. They could not do anything they wanted or thought.

As a result, in my opinion, if Christianity is a good religion and and help people and save them from difficult situations, why God can not see Indies or why God can not help them when they are tortured by Spaniards? What happened to God’s justice? I really want to know these answers … where is God when the destruction happened.

  3. i liked your pictures which shows that we do not have to go back to see what genocides or injustice has happend, but I do not think we should ask the question where was God because God did not killed these people, the humans did and if these people would have been real Chriatians, they would have not committed that crime.

  4. I, too liked your ideas and comments very much Beril. However; yes, you are right Seher; we can not question the presence of God by saying "Where is God?" " Did he close his eyes to those peoples cruelties? and said: "Let Christians do it!" There have been always such crimes or "genocides" throughout the history, ever since the humans existed. We do not and can not know for sure, and can not blame God or its existence, but what we know is the fact that "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others" as George Orwell points out in his Animal Farm in relation to this "injustice" which we are talking about.
